Peter Bogdanovich's career as a writer, has put in a good position for this comedy about the early days of cinema, in part based on his interviews with pioneering directors Raoul Walsh and Allan Dwan. Leo Harrigan (Ryan O'Neal) is a lawyer and Buck Greenway (Burt Reynolds) is a cowboy and Sagittarius. Both are sent to California to stop a renegade group of silent-film-maker - the stormy HH Cobb (Brian Keith) funds - which are in violation of MotionPicture Patents Co. Trust. Harrigan and Greenway in some way be found to work with the film crew has shut them down, they are joining forces with the director of photography Frank Franklin (John Ritter), leading lady Kathleen Cooke (Jane Hitchcock), and precocious prop girl Alice Forsyte (Tatum O'Neal). Greenway is a star and Harrigan respected director, but also fight for the affections of Cooke. Incidentally, Cobb's great speech given at the end almost verbatim from a quoteBogdanovich in an interview with actor James Stewart.
